In order to create a charting font, you need to think about three things:
The chart data: What kind of information do you want to display? This is where it all starts. The examples I'm about to show you are from an application that Travis works on, Chartwell . Think about what you might want to chart?
The style that you want to use: What charts do you want to create? Bar charts, line charts, pie charts, etc?
The typeface: What font do you want to use to display the data?
When it comes to the chart data, it's important to understand what the data will represent. For example, Chartwell is a bar font and we can create a bar chart using bar data. Bar data is a series of numbers that we can use to create a chart. In the example below, I've created a bar chart of percentage sales and I used a good old fashioned bar chart.
If you're not familiar with charting fonts, I'd encourage you to check out this Google search . There's a lot of great information out there about charting fonts. Charting fonts are fonts that you can use to create standard charts and graphs. Charting fonts are sometimes referred to as bar fonts.
If you're curious about the inner workings of Chartwell, check out the original blog post from Michael Ninness . In the post, he discusses the basics of how this typeface works. In this post, we'll be going a little deeper and talking about some of the inner workings of Chartwell.
The font is called Chartwell , and it is a Webfont that you can download for free from Travis Kochel's Web site . The font consists of the letters that look like a chart, such as a bar graph or a pie chart. The letters are outlined and they have gradients, making them very elegant. The capital letters are very large. The font comes in three weights: Thin, Regular, and Bold.
Why I love this font: the font is very clean and you can specify its style by setting the letter-spacing, letter-spacing-direction, letter-spacing-amount, word-spacing, and word-spacing-direction attributes. I mean, I don't think of it as a charting font but I suppose it could be used for that purpose.
